While dandruff isn’t going to directly make your hair fall out, it can lead to other things that can lead to temporary hair loss.

Some of the most common causes of dandruff are skin conditions, reactions to certain hair products, and not shampooing enough.

Overall, dandruff is seen as a sign of an unhealthy scalp. And that can lead to extra hair shedding. So, even though dandruff itself won’t cause hair loss, they are distantly related. Your hair will be more likely to be less healthy, causing breakage and split ends. The scratching from the itchiness can also cause damage to the hair follicles.

Causes of Dandruff

What many people may not realize is that dandruff is not usually caused by dryness. Most commonly, it’s due to a build-up of oils and dead skin cells that are not being properly washed out. Dry skin is one of the causes of course, but chances are that not washing your hair enough is the main problem.

Another cause could be a fungus on the scalp called Malassezia. It can cause new skin cells on the scalp to grow too fast leading to a build-up of dandruff.

The rest of the reasons are usually caused by things like skin conditions and allergic reactions to certain hair products.

Solutions

The first simple step would be to wash your hair more often. You can even try washing your hair every day until it starts to get better. Once you start getting it under control don’t keep washing it every day. That would wash too many oils out and lead to other issues. Doctors typically recommend washing every other day. It’s also important to note that you should always wash with conditioner.

Switching your shampoo could end up being the solution. Try using a special anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner. This could also work if your dandruff is being caused by an irritation from the shampoo you use. The best part is that they are usually the same price as regular ones and are sold over-the-counter at many stores.

If all else fails, seeing a dermatologist would be recommended. They will be able to specifically determine what is causing the dandruff and give you ways to treat it.
