How Stress Causes Hair Loss

Is hair loss from stress temporary? Hair loss due to stress and anxiety..

Hair Loss; Stress

Who hasn’t looked down to see hair falling out in the shower? Or hair in the drain? Here’s what to know about stress and hair loss.

Can Stress Cause Hair Loss?

Absolutely. Stress is a major contributor to hair loss.

Stress and hair loss go hand in hand. Stress isn’t just how we feel - it’s also how our bodies react biologically. When we’re under stress, our hormones change, and imbalances can occur. That may mean more deleterious hormones, like DHT, working against your hair.

How Does Stress Cause Hair Loss?

When you're under stress, you may notice quite a few resonses: feeling anxious, having trouble sleeping, and even getting sick with an upset stomach. Stress can also cause hair loss. When you’re “pulling out your hair,” as the expression goes, could you be doing exactly that?

What Is It Called When Stress Causes Hair Loss?

There’s actually a name for hair loss causes by stress - telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium is the term for hair loss that occurs temporarily as a result of stress, or some kind of trauma. Telogen hairs are one type of hair that has a bulb shape at one end,, and effluvium means “to flow out.”

Telogen effluvium results in excessive hair loss due to a disruption in the natural growth and rest cycle of hair. In fact, everyone should understand exactly how hair grows, how hair loss happens, and why.

Generally, between 80 and 90% of hair follicles on your head are actively growing, while the rest of your hair are in a resting phase. Hair loss due to stress, like telogen effluvium, is when the balance of hair resting and growing gets out of sync.

What To Do About Stress and Hair Loss?

First, you need to rule out that your hair loss isn’t due to genetic issues. If that’s the case, there are all-natural hair loss solutions you can turn to.

If you’re sure that your hair loss IS caused by stress, find ways to reduce your anxiety. Maybe your hair loss is caused by pregnancy, or some other traumatic event that created undue stress in your life. Try to eliminate or figure out ways to mitigate these circumstances.

One of the fastest ways to reduce stress and prevent hair loss is by practicing calming exercises. Meditation is highly effective, or practicing hobbies that you enjoy. To resolve stress and hair loss, it’s important to remove yourself from stressful situations, as well.

Reduce Stress and Reduce Hair Loss

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your whole body health and slow hair loss. Remember, you are what you eat, so a good diet and healthy nutrition is one of the best ways to take care of not just your hair, but your whole body.

Start taking better care of your hair. When styling, treat your hair gently.

Take a daily vitamin supplement, like iron, folic acid, or B12.
